Are you interested in the 2026 World Cup? Even if you are not a sports fan the fever is palpable for many.
At Peterhof Castle
Marie and I were lucky enough to be in St. Petersburg during the 2018 World Cup held in Russia. This was well before the war in Ukraine. For us it was a very exciting experience. Here is the post that I wrote about that day.
At the FIFA Fanfest
While we did not go to a game, we got caught up in all the excitement. I went out with Jack from Virginia on an evening tour. Here are a few pics including drinking vodka with the locals who were happy to welcome us.
Out and about with Jack
As we strolled down Nevsky Prospect, fans from Iran and Morocco were everywhere as their teams would play there the next night. National and cultural pride was being expressed with exuberance. Suddenly two Russians crashed the show as their team had just beat Saudi Arabia 5 to 0 in Moscow. We were all screaming with excitement no matter who you were cheering for.
Iran beat Morocco 1 to 0 the next night. France defeated Croatia 2 to 0 to win the final for the cup that year. This year anything can happen including a Canadian win. Despite all the negatives about high ticket prices, corruption, politics and racism, it’s still a pretty good show.
Little Curaçao plays Germany today and has sent 3000 fans to see the game in Houston (that’s 2% of their total population at the game!!!)
Don’t miss it folks it even if you are not a fan of the beautiful game!
I have probably played close to 500 rounds of golf since retiring 15 years ago. Yes it is an addiction. Recently I went on a 3 day golf adventure with the golf buddies.
Golf Buddies at Deerhurst, me 2nd from left
It was fab. We journeyed from Arnprior to Huntsville, ON to play the highly ranked Deerhurst Resort Highlands golf course. Tucked into the Canadian Shield, this is a spectacular course with steep hills and gorgeous views and fast greens. We loved it.
Moving on the next day we played the gorgeous Parry Sound golf course. An equally spectacular course with the Shield poking through again but much less hilly. I loved this one even more. On our way home on the 3rd day we stopped at the Homestead at Wolf Ridge GC in Killaloe, a nice country course we have played several times before.
We stayed in beautiful Parry Sound the home of Bobby Orr, just off Georgian Bay at a condo owned by one of the golf buddies. It was an all round great trip. We ate at several superb restaurants including a Cajun spiced fresh pickerel meal I will not soon forget.
Perhaps the best part of golf is the social contact we have together. Chatting about health ailments, electric cars, places we’ve travelled to, jokes and career experiences, we really bond. Golf is a bonus.
We are slowing down now. Playing 3 days in a row was a challenge for me. I hope we can to do it again next year. Thanks golf buddies for all the fun, the great memories and all those gimmies on the green!
Well Dave finally had his golf fix in Mexico. A friend of Bruce’s, Don is a member at the Vidanta Golf Club here in Nuevo Vallarta. He invited Dave to play and Marie encouraged him to go.
Vidanta is the largest hotel and resort developer and operator in Mexico and is currently developing a $1.3B US Cirque du Soleil theme park here. We have been through the huge Vidanta time share resort several times. It is so big, you cannot find your way out and must take multiple shuttle busses just to get around inside.
To get to and from the course, Dave took a Lime scooter. It’s fun and convenient. With the app on your phone, you simply unlock, use, park and relock the electric scooter in the place of your choice. They sit outside our complex and are always readily available. Neat!

Of course Vidanta Golf is very very fancy. Each group must take a local caddy who advises you distances, hands you your club, cleans them and tells you which side of the hole to put to on the green. The Nayar course we played is very beautiful with lots of sand and water. Like Florida, the grass is very hard and dry making for long rolls and tougher putting and chipping.
Garth tees off
The course requires us to drive over the longest golf bridge in the world to get to and from parts of the course. There is quite a lot of wildlife around including crocodiles, iguanas, many beautiful song birds and blooming Jacaranda trees.
.
We had a very good time and were completely exhausted at the end due to the heat and strong sun. Overall. I played not too bad. Will definitely play again!
Artruro our caddy was great! With Don, Heather and Bruce
Thanks Don, Heather and Bruce for arranging this wonderful Mexican golf experience! Fore!!!
It is great to be home. Within the first few days we have been engulfed in mystery – the mystery of birth, marriage and death.
First, we learned of the passing of Dave’s friend Paul. He had not been well for sometime and it was a blessing that God finally took him home. His daughter contacted us about her dad’s passing and invited us to attend his interment service in Norway Bay, QC.
Marie and I have fond memories of visiting Paul and going for a ride in his 1932 Chevrolet roadster named Dixie and, in his canoe. We had brunch at Pine Lodge several times and Paul accompanied Dave on a couple of nostalgic rounds of golf there. Dave and Paul met more than 10 years ago at the Ottawa Civil War Roundtable and became friends. In 2009, they journeyed to Gettysburg, PA and toured the Civil War battlefield that Paul loved so much to visit.

Paul was a very interesting character, a lover of history with a photographic memory. He collected antique gramophone players and musical instruments as well as lovingly restored vintage cars. The interment ceremony was held in Norway Bay just down the street from where he had lived with his dog Babe. We met several of his family members and friends. Miss you Paul, rest in peace.

Next we learned the great family news that Elias Blaze Morgan was born on Oct 7, 2018, weighing, 7 lbs. 13 oz. Thanks to God’s grace, Elias, Ashley and Kyle are all doing well. We have received a bunch of photos and have done the first of many face chats. Elias has gorgeous dark eyes, looks like his mother but definitely has the Morgan look to him. We are so proud and happy! Congratulations Kyle and Ashley! Welcome into the world Elias Blaze, you are so loved. We can’t wait to meet you in person.

Finally we experienced the mystery and beauty of marriage. Dave’s nephew Nick married Heather in a beautiful ceremony held at Strathmere, just south of Ottawa. They have a wonderful blended family – 2 boys and 2 girls. We had a great party with great food and music and wished them well in their new life together. It was a beautiful thing to see and tears were flowing. Congratulations Nick and Heather, may you have a long, happy and love filled marriage!
Engulfed in the mystery of birth, marriage and death – in hope, love and heaven. We give thanks to God for his great glory, mercy and love in our lives.
I am an on again, off again sports fan. About a week before our Baltic cruise, I noticed a posting from a guy named Jack on the Cruisecritic roll call where people meet up beforehand. He was desperately looking for someone to accompany him on an evening out in Saint Petersburg to experience World Cup fever. I cautiously responded that I was intrigued and potentially interested.
In Russia you can’t just walk off the ship and wander around. You either have to have a tourist visa ($$$) or have signed up with an accredited Russian tour company who provide you with a blanket visa while on one of their tours. As it turned out, we had both already contracted with Alla Tours to see Saint Petersburg so it was easy for me to join him in this private tour.
Not sure what to expect, Jack said he had experienced World Cup fever before and said I would love the excitement of the fans in the streets, bars, jumbo screens etc.. Marie and I tend to enjoy soccer or futebol as they call it elsewhere. So Jack and I headed out the first evening we were in Saint Petersburg for our world cup fever tour.
Our tour guide asked us what we wanted to do. I wanted to see the new stadium built specifically for the world cup in Saint Petersburg. We could not get into it but we stopped for a photo. It is known as Krevtosky or Zenit Stadium, cost $1.7millionUS and seats some 68,000. Would love to have gone to a game there but would you have to apply to FIFA many months in advance to get a ticket. Morocco and Iran were to play here the following night. A ticket costs from $90 to $150US but also provides you with a “fanpass visa” entitling you to go anywhere in the country for 45 days. Pretty cool.
We then stopped at a souvenir shop and we each bought a nice Russia World Cup 2018 ball cap. Jack then suggested we go to a bar. Our guide whose name I have unfortunately forgotten, was a nice young man and suggested we go to a “local bar”.
Hello comrade Lenin, comrade Morgan here.
We sauntered into a bar. Before we sat down, I warily took a picture of everyone and they cheered! Good start I thought. We ordered some beer and food and were enjoying ourselves when 2 Russians at the next table noticed us came over to offer us some vodka and to have a toast. It does not get more local than this I thought! One of the Russians was a navy captain as had been Jack, so we all connected around that topic. The vodka actually tasted good! It is ordered in shot glasses or in a larger glass container. You drink it straight down and follow it with a fruit juice chaser.

Jack disappeared outside for a while to chat and I continued chatting with my Russian friend and other fans as they came by. It was soon time to head out to the streets and we said our goodbyes. As we left the sidewalk in front was crowded with people chatting and having a good time. A couple of young Russian men raced by with their flag, their team having just defeated Saudi Arabia.
We walked a few blocks down Nevsky Prospect and joined in the fun. Fans of Morocco and of Iran were running down the sidewalks and chanting and singing out their country’s praise with large flags. We high-fived each other and everyone smiled and cheered. We were all one in our love of futebol and our home nation.
The next day we saw the Fanfest zone where they have the jumbo screens and non-stop fan celebrations to which you need a ticket. This was truly a memorable world experience!
Towards the end of the cruise we met Jack again with his lovely wife Carmy for a drink. It was a fitting way to say goodbye after a great time together. We made tentative plans to travel together again sometime. As I write this, Russia has just defeated Spain to enter the quarter finals. Go Russia Go! However, perennial favorite team Brazil is also in the running. Thanks Jack for the intiative to arrange this fab tour.
One of the fun activities we discovered around Fort Myers is to attend a MLB spring training baseball game or two. There are two stadiums and two grapefruit league teams playing here: Boston Red Sox at Jet Blue Park and Minnesota Twins at Hammond Stadium.
This year we saw the Toronto Blue Jays play the Twins and the Boston Orioles play the Red Sox. Hammond Field is newer and very impressive. We attended the game with John and Anita Jarrell from Saskatoon. John and I went to U of W together many years ago. We reconnected at a class reunion and discovered that we were both coming to the same area in Florida each winter. Hence we have reunited our long time friendship.
The lineupGreat scoreboardPretty good seatsEnjoying the gameToronto coach John GibbonsJays lost but we had a blast!
Anita is a great and gracious host and we have met their daughter Beth who has been coming here with her family for many years too. They stay on Sanibel. We have become quite enamored with the lifestyle there through our association and also through seeing our other friends Dick and Carol who live there.
Marie and I also ventured out to Jet Blue Park to see Boston beat the Orioles. We had fun singing ….Love that Dirty Water.. Oh, oh, Bastin you’r ma home! Learned some new expressions like: “Knawk it out of the pawk!” and “Where did we pawk the caw?” A lot of Bostonians made the day memorable for us.
Where’s the caw?
We have made plans with the Jarrells to attend a Jays game or two here next year, God willing.
